We had an interesting conversation at lunch today, where I mentioned taking off my shoes when entering someone’s house. I got the strangest reaction, like I was from a different planet… now, I’m not the most normal one in the world by far, but I wasn’t expecting that response.

I started to wonder if it was a Jewish thing? even though my family isn’t religious… or, was it an old school Brooklyn thing from the 80’s?

[was I the only one that asked to be excused from the dinner table? are my parents part of some fucked up cult? what the hell did they do to me?]

After flipping through a few websites I came to realize that it’s not as common as I thought but more a culture, or religious gesture. I learned that, on the flip side, there are even some people who would be offended if you took off your shoes in their home.

Who knew?

And that it is even argued that feet are more disgusting than the dirt on people’s shoes.

But the truth is, unless the person walked barefoot outdoors they would not have picked up the nasty things that the soles of shoes pick up…… but no matter, my reading concluded that wearing shoes brings in the majority of the dirt in one’s home, up to 80% in some reports.

I suppose it also depends on the case, in my apartment with a 90 pound Rottweiler there’s just no need to take off your shoes… people with an infant, who is constantly touching the floor and sticking their hands in their mouth, must think differently….

…..now, is wearing socks while having sex such a crime?

Response to “shoes off at the door?”

I actually think a girl in nothing but socks is really sexy. I think I may have a sock fetish. :)
