You all know from reading the bulletin board how I feel about the solar stocks… so I was really excited to hear that there was a new solar energy ETF available on the market. The index is holding some of the more popular companies — First Solar, Evergreen, Canadian Solar, (my favorite), and then a whole bunch of other solar companies around the world, some that would be difficult to buy in the US… Renewable Energy Corporation trades on the Oslo Exchange, and Meyer Burger a Switzerland based company (who is killing it) creates precision cutting saws used to make the silicon wafers for panels.
WIKI: ETFs offer public investors an undivided interest in a pool of securities and other assets and thus are similar in many ways to traditional mutual funds, except that shares in an ETF can be bought and sold throughout the day like stocks on a securities exchange through a broker-dealer.
There is tremendous potential in solar energy, we haven’t seen anything yet — and the demand will continue to grow exponentially. This fund has 25 of the best companies around the world… the US, China, Germany, Norway, Spain.. it’s really a great opportunity to have a diverse collection of solar stocks, from different geological sectors like this fund has.
“Claymore Securities just listed the Claymore/MAC Global Solar Energy Index ETF (TAN), According to index provider MAC Indexing, the world will need $4 trillion in new electricity generation over the next 22 years. Solar-industry revenue grew by 50% last year, but solar accounts for only 0.06% global electricity consumption; that should mean solar will have tremendous growth ahead of it. The “infancy” state of the industry makes the case for using an ETF to avoid single-stock risk. A bet on the industry is much easer to make than being sure you have selected the correct couple of stocks.”
